How To Say
Please note: some of these definitions are pertaining to the English language and may be nonsensical in other languages
Say "I am gay"
It is always best to be positive.  If you are bi you can be positive about that too, just say "I am bisexual".  If you are a boy and you are 12 years old and you find boys more attractive than girls then you know you are gay before going into your teens.  Sometimes a response is "Are you sure?" or "You are just going through a phase.".  This is why you must sound positive, and confident.
Do not say "straight"
When referring to heterosexuals do not use the word 'straight', use the word 'heterosexuals', or 'hets' for short.  Hets are no more straight than gays are bent.  If you refer to hets as straight you are implying that gays are crooked.
Do not say "straight acting"
This phrase is wrong on so many levels.  For one, it implies you have to look to het men to see masculinity, which falls foul of the fact that over 90% of gay men are masculine.  For two, it implies a gay guy is only 'acting' if people will think he is masculine.  For three, that those people will then make the risky assumption that when they see a masculine guy they will assume he is het.  And finally, the point made in the previous paragraph.
Say "male couple"
Say "male couple", do not say "two gay boys" (unless you mean two separate gay boys who are not dating).  In fact gay couples have the right to the word 'couple' more than hets do.  After all, the word 'couple' means two of the same thing, as in a "couple of chairs" or a "couple of goats".  You can't say a "couple of one chair and one goat".  You can say a "couple of boys" or a "couple of girls", you can't say a "couple of one boy one girl", it doesn't make sense.  So if someone refers to "a couple" do not immediately assume they mean heterosexuals.  Someone using the word 'couple' should not expect you to assume they mean opposite-sex people.  The word 'couple' by its very nature is more appropriate for same-sex couples.
Do not say "lesbians and gay men"
Remember - lesbians are gay.  The word 'gay' simply means homosexual.  And the word 'homosexual' refers to both men and women, boys and girls.  So 'lesbians' are gay women.  So it doesn't make sense to say "gay women and gay men" when you can simply say "gay people".  Or for short "gays".  The phrase "lesbians and gay men" also makes us sound divided.  Politically speaking - the term "gay people" is better as it refers to a united community.  The phrase "lesbians and gays" is also bad, for the reasons just given but also because it implies the word 'gays' means just gay men, when in fact it means all gay people.
Do not say "biological"
For instance, do not say "biological father".  You have a 'genetic' father (whose genes you possess), and you may have a 'filial' father (who is raising you).  But every human is biological.  Next time someone asks you "Is that your biological father?" say "No, that's my robotic father!".
Do not say the q-word
Do not say "queer".  It is abusive and derogatory, and should not be used to refer to a person or what a person does.  There is nothing queer about homosexuality, it is perfectly natural and normal.  There was a group in the States called the Moral Majority in the 1980s.  They believed that they could get gay people to call themselves the q-word by telling them it was 'cool' to do so.  Of course it had the effect of self-oppression.  They told gay people that if they used it often enough the negativity would wear off.  Of course it didn't, and never will.  Also, do not say 'fag' or 'faggot' or 'fruit' or any other abusive word, even in jest.  It has a draining effect on all young people around you, and gives hatemongers excuses to use those words too.  If you want to say effeminate say 'effeminate' or 'camp' or 'queeny'.
Say "on the spectrum"
This phrase means on the rainbow.  It is where a person says they are if they don't believe any of the labels 'gay', 'bi', or 'het', fits them.  Alfred Kinsey, a sex researcher in the 1940s invented a scale of 0 to 6, which neatly matched the seven colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).  On this scale 0 represents totally heterosexual, 3 represents bisexual, and 6 represents totally gay.  Some people say that a "questioning youth" (the Q in LGBTQ) is on the scale as 1 or 2.  Whereas others say that "questioning" means an uncertainty as to where on the whole spectrum one would fit. Most people would agree that human sexuality varies across a wide range (spectrum), but that the terms gay, bi, and het are useful to describe people in general.  Never say that "bisexuals don't exist", that is just plain false.
